Life Is a Story:An Interpretation of John Barth's "Life-story"

AbstractFrom some post-modernists' view, life has become a fictional existence in which language, rather than present, operates human experiences. Through analyzing John Barth's essay "Life-story" and the motif of "literature of exhaustion",this paper examines how this is true. Meanwhile, by relating to structuralism and Deconstruction, this paper also points out since the meaning of language lies only in the never-ending postponement of the signified, the meaning of life can only be, found in the perpetual motion of itself. Therefore, life is more often uncertain, ambiguous and unintelligible.
Keywords:fictional existence, literature of exhaustion, deconstruction, ambiguous
